Master of Music in Pedagogy – Voice

The Voice Pedagogy Program Curriculum is a thriving community of singers, both faculty and students, who are committed to merging scientific research with intuitive knowledge to support singers of all styles. In the pedagogy program, you will learn a functional approach to singing and teaching that meets the needs of your clients. You will study voice physiology, acoustics, motor learning theory and cognitive science, using repertoire and methods that are both traditional and contemporary, which will empower you to elevate the craft of the singers you teach.

Admission Requirements

 

2. Application Requirements: Submit the following using the Application Portal by January 15, 2025.

• Unofficial transcripts from all baccalaureate and master’s degree studies, documenting successful (or pending successful) degree completions and a minimum bachelor’s GPA of 2.5. (All post-secondary institutions where a degree or relevant credit has been earned.)
  • Applicants can choose to submit unofficial transcripts for initial review. If admitted, the applicant must submit an official transcript for each unofficial transcript upload. See our full policy for more details.
  • A Baccalaureate degree in music is required. 
  • Upload one copy of the scanned unofficial transcript from each institution attended.
  • Admitted applicants must provide official transcripts from each institution from which they previously supplied unofficial transcripts.
  • Transcripts from non-U.S. institutions must also be submitted for a course-by-course academic credential evaluation to obtain U.S. equivalency information regarding courses, grades and GPA.
• Curriculum Vitae/Résumé
• Essay of 500–750 words addressing your interest in this field/program, previous experiences that contributed to your preparation for further study in this field, area(s) of interest for possible research and how they relate to your future goals.

3. Prescreening Requirements: Firm deadline for prescreening materials submission is January 15, 2025.

Classical Voice specialization

• Video recordings (mp4 or wmv) of two selections in contrasting styles performed from memory with live accompaniment. Recordings must be video and must show the applicant performing. Audio-only recordings will not be accepted.

Applicants who pass the recorded prescreening will be invited to register for an audition. You will not be able to register for an audition before successfully completing your prescreening.

Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) specialization

• Video recordings (mp4 or wmv) of two contrasting pieces in the style or genre of your choice (jazz, musical theatre, folk, rock, pop, etc.). Applicants should demonstrate what they do best. Recordings must be video and must show the applicant performing. Audio-only recordings will not be accepted.

Applicants who pass the recorded prescreening will be invited to register for an audition. You will not be able to register for an audition before successfully completing your prescreening.

4. Audition & Interview Requirements: Firm deadline to register for a Graduate Audition is February 1, 2025.

Classical Voice specialization

• Invited applicants must present a 15-minute (minimum) recital of stylistically and historically balanced content. Before the audition, applicants are required to submit a program of the works they will perform. The committee may then choose to hear complete works or ask for specific sections.
• A minimum of three languages must be represented.
• Memorization is required.
• Invited singers auditioning on campus must audition with live accompaniment and are encouraged to provide their own accompanist. Applicants will be provided an accompanist.

Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) specialization

• Invited applicants must prepare 15 minutes (minimum) of genre and style appropriate selections. Before the audition, applicants are required to submit a program of the works they will perform. The committee may then choose to hear complete works or ask for specific sections.

• Repertoire choices should represent the style/genre of music (jazz, musical theatre, folk, pop, rock, etc.) that best reflects the applicant’s interests and abilities.
• Memorization is required.
• Invited singers auditioning on campus or during a virtual audition day must audition with backing tracks. For on campus auditions, applicants must bring their backing tracks on an electronic device. Amplification equipment will be provided.

Register For Your Audition

Audition dates are limited and may fill and close well in advance of the audition date. You will register for your audition through the Shenandoah Application Portal. All audition and interview confirmation materials will be accessible in the Application Portal and sent to the applicant via the email listed on the application. The deadline to register for a Graduate Audition is February 1, 2025.

Admission decisions are not made until all application materials are received and the audition has been completed.
